Defective Polaris Sportsman ATVs

Saturday, January 07, 2017By Richard Alexander

Polaris is recalling another one of its off-road vehicles. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just released a summary on the latest Polaris recall. The Sportsman 570 All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) is under recall due to a potential fire hazard. This recall involves 2014-2016 Sportsman 570 Touring and X2 models and 2017 Sportsman 570 6x6 models. At this time, there have been about 35 reports of damaged fuel rails and leaks. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported yet. If you have one of these ATVs, you need to sop using it immediately and contact Polaris for a free repair.

ATV Crashes by The Numbers

  • In 2012, more than 100,000 injuries occurred due to ATV crashes.
  • About 25 percent of those injuries involved children under the age of 16.
  • Over a quarter of all injuries involve the head or neck.
  • About a third of all fatal ATV crashes happened on paved surfaces.
  • On average, 144 kids die each year in ATV related crashes.
  • 568 adults die in ATV crashes across the nation each year.

ATV Accidents in California

More people die in ATV crashes in California than in any other state in the U.S. Between 1982 and 2011, there were 628 ATV crash related deaths in the State of California. At least 108 of those deaths that occurred between 1982 and 2007 involved children under the age of 16 years old. In many injury causing and fatal ATV accidents, the person who was killed or injured didn’t even own the vehicle. It’s important for all ATV owners to ensure the safety of any guests or visitors who may get the opportunity to ride an ATV.

ATV Safety in California

Consumers are reminded that ATVs are large, heavy and fast recreational vehicles. Anybody riding an ATV should know how to do so safely, and take all of the recommended safety precautions. Riding double, especially on one-person ATVs, is always discouraged, as it can change the center of gravity of the vehicle and make it more likely to tip, flip or roll on the riders. Riders are also discouraged from allowing children to ride on adult-sized ATVs and from riding on paved roads.
