Injured by a Defective GM Product but Didn't File a Timely Lawsuit? You Need to Know
Wednesday, January 04, 2017By Richard Alexander
There have been many high-profile car recalls in the news as of late, but perhaps none more well-known than the General Motors (GM) ignition switch recalls. If you or a loved one were injured due to the failure of a GM-family vehicle switch or airbag, it's not too late to bring a lawsuit to hold the company responsible.
For several years, GM received complaints about switch defects turning cars off and causing airbags not to deploy during crashes. The company even knew about switches slipping during installation but took the defective products to market anyway. Affected vehicles span GM's lineup: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Saturn. Many more cars are affected than originally believed by this dangerous ignition switch defect.
The defect can cause the switch to turn off the car, losing power to the engine and causing the airbags not to deploy in a crash. The risk is increased "if your key ring is carrying added weight . . . or your vehicle experiences rough road conditions or other jarring or impact related events."
Affected model years span from 1997 through 2011, depending on the make and model of the vehicle. If you drive one of these vehicles, it is critical to your safety and that of those around you that you find out right away if your car is affected. You can find out more at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's official recall website.
If you or someone you know was injured as a result of a GM switch or airbag problem, you should contact an experienced products liability lawyer immediately. Even if your injuries or property damage happened many years ago, a recent court case has opened the door for these suits to be filed. As you might have guessed, GM has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the appellate court's decision.
