[background music playing] Rasheed Hilson had just enjoyed his 12th birthday. He was in junior high and enjoying an inter-scholastic basketball game in the school gym, when he remembered it was time to catch his bus. Rasheed ran across the street to catch the bus. He would have safely crossed had a driver been obeying the 25 mph speed limit and stopped in time to avoid Rasheed. Rasheed was propelled from zero mph to 33 mph, crushing his hip, slamming his skull into the windshield, and throwing him over the car. He suffered permanent brain damage. Rasheed will be bedridden or in a wheel chair for the rest of his life. In need of serious help, Rasheed’s mother, Dalette, set out to find a lawyer for guidance and support. Dalette: and to know that the attorney didn’t even have enough in him to meet me personally regarding the situation with my small child. Dalette Hilson discharged her first lawyer and asked Richard Alexander to represent her son. Dalette: I called mr. Ritchie Alexander’s fluffer immediately when I spoke with one of the assistance of representatives of the firm. They were really involved – “Oh my goodness! What? Your child?” – you know. They were more involved. They cared more. He had specialists from all over the country, I mean. He had construction engineers, I mean. He had doctors from all over California, northern, southern California, from back east to team up, to use their expertise to help. And if you get in his way, you know, he’s gonna knock you down, and he just moves forward. $50,000 was offered by the driver’s insurance company to settle Rasheed’s claim before trial. The offer was rejected. Richard Alexander and Jeff Rickard tried Rasheed’s case to a jury less than 7 months after he was injured. $10.1 million judgement for Rasheed Hilson was won after a 14 day jury trial.
