A Fremont woman was struck yesterday while crossing Civic Center Drive in Fremont while in the crosswalk. At this time she remains in critical condition.
According to Sgt. Mark Dang of the Fremont Police Department, Manchi Wong, 59, suffered a major head injury also called a traumatic brain injury (TBI), after being struck around 5 p.m. in the 38900 block of Civic Center Drive on Tuesday.
Wong was reportedly unresponsive at the scene, police said. She was transported to Eden Hospital in Castro Valley. Eden Medical Center is a level IV trauma unit that specializes in treating catastrophic injuries such as the TBI suffered by Ms. Wong. She remained hospitalized and unconscious on Wednesday morning, Dang said.
The driver of the vehicle, 19-year-old Nathaniel Fedalizo, of San Jose, was driving a sedan north on Civic Center Drive and struck Wong as she was walking west across the road in the crosswalk, police said.
Fedalizo was uninjured, and police said drugs or alcohol do no appear to be a factor.
