All but one lane of Highway 152 in Gilroy was closed on Tuesday night after a fatal head-on collision around 5:30 p.m.
According to numerous eyewitness testimony relayed to California Highway Patrol (CHP), a red 1995 Hyundai Accent swerved in and out of traffic on Highway 152, then barely missing a retaining wall before slamming into a large-haul truck. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and while the name of the deceased has not been released, it is known that the truck driver did not suffer any injuries nor did any other motorists.
This comes a few days after a hit-and-run collision in downtown Gilroy that left a woman in serious condition.
According to the Gilroy Police Department, a 24-year old woman was hit by a vehicle as she crossed the intersection of 10th and Rosanna Street.
The vehicle, described as a full-sized, Champagne-colored SUV with a missing driver’s side mirror, was last seen traveling on West 10th Street toward Monterey Road sometime before 10 p.m. Police canvassed the area following the incident but could not locate the offending vehicle.
The victim was transported to a local trauma center, where she has since been listed in serious condition. Her identity has yet to be released.
