Imagine your phone exploding in your hands. Worse yet, imagine that same phone exploding in your child’s hands. Those are the situations recently faced by some Samsung Note7 owners. Many people know that Samsung has issued a recall of the Note7 phone. But did you know that replacements are also part of the recall?
The Note7 was one of the most highly anticipated electronic device releases in recent years. Samsung just released the product in August, getting it onto the market before Apple’s new release, the iPhone 7.
Despite early acclaim for available features on the Note7, the product fell into a tailspin quickly. The company received “92 reports of the batteries overheating in the U.S., including 26 reports of burns and 55 reports of property damage, including fires in cars and a garage.”
Worse yet, a six-year-old boy was reportedly injured in New York when his grandmother’s Note7 phone overheated and exploded in his hands while the boy was watching videos. The explosion “set off alarms” in the house, and the boy had to be treated for burns.
The voluntary recall executed by Samsung in early September was not smooth. Early on, the company attempted to handle exchanges on its own, without involving the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Since that time, the company has worked with the CPSC on an official recall. On October 13, the CPSC announced that Samsung had expanded the recall to encompass all Galaxy Note7 smartphones. It is important to note that this expanded recall includes many Note7s that were previously given to customers as replacements.
At first, the company offered a replacement or refund program. However, Samsung recently announced that it would pay customers $100 to return Note7s.
