The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just issued a press release about the recall of Bosch roof-mounted solar panels. According to the CPSC, these defective solar panels can overheat, which poses a fire risk to consumers. Since these panels are roof-mounted, there is great concern over the possibility of setting a consumer’s roof on fire. At this time, 28,000 units are being recalled. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, but the CPSC is hoping to help get the word out to get these faulty solar panels replaced as swiftly as possible.
Defective Bosch Solar Panels
The solar panels impacted by this recall are Roof-Mounted Bosch Photovoltaic Solar Modules with model number c-Si M 60 NA30119. These panels are 65 inches by 39 inches, and they’re 1.65 inches deep. Commercial installers initially sold these $300 panels nationwide between October 2011 and May 2013. The cells are housed in glass-foil laminate that is framed by an anodized aluminum profile. They are capable of putting out a 245-watt peak. At this time, no information has been released on how or why these solar panels overheat. If you have one of these solar panels, you’re urged to stop using it immediately and contact Bosch to arrange for a free replacement solar panel.
CPSC’s Fast Track Recall
Bosch initiated this recall voluntarily. They are taking advantage of the CPSC’s Fast Track Recall process. Conducting a Fast Track recall means making a commitment to work with the CPSC and announcing and initiating recalls and remedies in a swift fashion. The idea is that the sooner a recall is conducted and the sooner remedies are issued, the safer consumers are. Over the past few years, we’ve seen recalls delayed for months and even years longer than they should have, putting consumers at greater risk for injury-causing or potentially fatal incidents involving faulty products that manufacturers knew about. Consumers in California and across the nation are counting on manufacturers and retailers to ensure their products are safe and perform as intended.
