Bridgestone Tires issued a recall of approximately 2,700 all-position, wide-based radial commercial truck tires in size 425/65R22.5 sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The voluntary recall was prompted by concerns that the affected tires do not comply with endurance test specifications under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and similar laws in Canada and Mexico.
At this time, there are no reports of injuries or collisions associated with the defective tires. The tires under the recall present a risk of exposure of steel cords in the sidewall. This could lead to corrosion of the cords in that area. Air loss can result from this deterioration while the car is being driven and increase the risk of a collision.
The recall was announced by Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations LLC and Bridgestone Canada Inc. It includes four commercial tire models: Firestone FS818 tires, Bridgestone M854 tires, Bridgestone M860A tires and Bridgestone M864 tires that were produced between June 10, 2018 and June 30, 2018. Regulatory agencies inside and outside of the United States were notified by the tire manufacturer of the defect. Bridgestone is also alerting equipment manufacturers, fleets, dealers, stores and other possible consumer outlets that the affected tires should be found and replaced. Bridgestone emphasized to consumers that any tires that were produced outside the June 10-30 time frame are not subject to the recall and fully comply with regulatory standards.
This news comes on the heels of a more widespread recall that took place in August involving Bridgestone/Firestone tires. The recall involved 6.5 million tires used for light trucks and sport utility vehicles that were being investigated in connection with 46 deaths and 80 injuries in car accidents. Most of these tires were located on Ford sport utility vehicles. The company was forced to initiate the recall after a substantial increase in the number of incidents involving the P235/75R15 tire models, which were the subject of the recall. More than 270 complaints were filed with the NHTSA related to faulty Firestone truck tires implicated in this recall. Consumers reported that the tires peeled off their casings “like a banana” while the cars were in use at accelerated speeds.
