Judith Cervantes 30 of San Jose has been identified by the Santa Clara County coroner’s office as the woman in a single-vehicle crash near Eastridge Mall yesterday.
Cervantes was driving with her 3-year-old nephew when she crashed into a light pole Monday at about noon, according to San Jose police. Cervantes later died at a hospital, police said.
Police initially reported that the boy was Cervantes’ son.
The boy suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital primarily as a precaution, said San Jose police Sgt. Ronnie Lopez.
Cervantes was driving south on Quimby Road near Rigoletto Drive when she lost control and crashed into the pole, Lopez said. Preliminary investigation indicated that Cervantes was traveling at a high rate of speed, in excess of the posted 35 MPH limit, according to police.
The vehicle’s exact speed remains under investigation, according to police.
Though the investigation is ongoing, alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, Lopez said. However, a final determination is pending toxicology results by the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.
