A Medscape article brings to light the results of a recent cross-sectional survey published in the July/August issue of the Annals of Family Medicine regarding the connection between erectile dysfunction (ED) and early diabetes. The results suggest that any diagnosis of ED should immediately trigger diabetes screening, in middle-aged men especially. A decade of recent research and evidence show that ED is an early indicator for cardiovascular disease, and new evidence suggests that ED is also associated with undiagnosed cardiometabolic risk factors.
ED and Undiagnosed Diabetes
The survey found that the predicted probability of having undiagnosed diabetes for men between the ages of 40 to 59 years old was 1 in 10 for those with ED. For men without ED, the probability is only 1 in 50. When men between the ages of 40 and 59 are considered, the prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes is 19.1 percent in men with ED and only 3.3 percent in men without ED. They also found that in the fasting glucose analytic sample, the prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes was 11.5 percent in men with ED and only 2.8 percent in men without ED.
