From time to time, organizations come up with rankings for the best “this” and the worst “that.” It’s always interesting to see how the states compare with one another in these rankings. One type of ranking that usually hits home with many of us is that which compares our abilities across state lines, such as those that purport to rank the best and worst drivers.
A recent study by SmartAsset reviewed several factors to determine which states had the worst drivers in the nation. The group looked at these items:
- the percentage of drivers who carried insurance;
- each state’s DUI rate (per thousand drivers);
- each state’s traffic fatality rate (per thousand drivers); and
- Google searches relating to traffic tickets.
The group weighted each of the four factors equally in making its final determinations.
Here are the states with the worst drivers in the nation, according to this study:
- Florida;
- Mississippi;
- Oklahoma;
- New Jersey;
- Delaware;
- Alabama;
- Vermont;
- Tennessee;
- Texas; and
- Nevada
You might notice that four of these states are in the southeast.
California is notably absent from this list. However, if you look further down the results, you will find California in the top half of the states, at number 17. California’s worst rating was for the number of DUI arrests for each 1,000 drivers—8.66. On this single factor, California was ranked 5th in the nation. The closest state, geographically, that made the overall top 10 list was Nevada.
