FAIRFIELD — A dog attack in Fairfield on Friday morning left two women injured and police searching for the second pet owner whose dog was one of three canines involved in the attack, police said.
A 52-year-old woman was jogging in the 600 block of Pavilion Drive at about 6 a.m. when she was attacked by three dogs, a bull mastiff, a pit bull-bull mastiff mix and an American bulldog, police said.
Neighbors heard the woman’s screams and called police at 6:05 a.m., but took matters into their own hands before Fairfield police and fire personnel responded to the scene.
One neighbor, in an attempt to save the woman’s life, shot the bull mastiff, causing the dog to release its grip on the woman, police said.
The other two dogs then ran down the street toward two other women jogging in the area. One of the joggers, a 34-year-old woman, tripped as she was fleeing from the dogs.
As the dogs began to attack the fallen woman, a second neighbor shot at both animals, striking them each in the leg, police said.
The 52-year-old woman was taken by ambulance to Kaiser Medical Center in Vallejo, where she is being treated for serious injuries.
The second victim was transported to NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield, where she was treated for moderate injuries and released.
Both women are Fairfield residents.
Animal Services officers rounded up the dogs and contacted the owner of the bull mastiff and pit bull mix, who agreed to have both dogs euthanized, police said.
The man also informed the officers that the third dog belonged to his son.
The bull mastiff has already been put down, while the pit bull mix is scheduled to be euthanized soon, police said.
Police are currently investigating the attack and requested the Solano County district attorney’s office file charges against the dog owners for allowing vicious animals to run free.
