The products can be identified by the “Kreative Kids” trademark, and item number 2013NW081 on the label. From September 2013 to April 2017, the company has sold about 7,600 such items through Amazon and at gift shops in several states such as California, Iowa, New York, Ohio, and Texas.
According to the law, in Australia for instance, manufacturers of children’s nightwear and daywear must comply with clothing flammability standards. Children’s clothing must be made of materials that are of low fire hazard. They must not easily catch fire, or have a slower rate of melting once alight.
However, the mentioned recalled products failed to meet these flammability standards. The items were made of 100 percent polyester. Although polyester does not catch fire easily, once ignited, severe melting and dripping will occur.
This poses a high risk of burn injuries to children. As we all know, clothes are directly in contact with the body. As the material melts, it easily sticks to the skin and causes serious burns. This then may result in severe and long-term complications, such as scarring, permanent disabilities affecting the musculo-skeletal system, or in the worst case, death.
It is common knowledge that children are very prone to cause fire and incur burn injuries. At their early age, they are yet unable to discern the dangers of fire.
