Ford has announced another major recall of its 2018 model F-150 pickup trucks and Expedition SUVS in North America. The recall also includes certain commercial trucks. In total, nearly 350,000 Ford vehicles with 10-speed and 6-speed automatic transmissions are subject to the recall stemming from a defect in the gear shift. That defect could cause the car to move unintentionally and result in significant injury or death to passengers and drivers.
According to the car manufacturer, the problem is related to the gearshift cable. The clip that holds the cable to the transmission could become dislocated, thereby causing the transmission to shift into another gear. If the transmission shifts into a different gear without the driver’s knowledge or intent, the car could roll or move. Therefore, if the car is placed in park and the key is removed, the transmission gear may not actually be locked in the “park” position. The car does not alert the driver that the car gear is not in “park” mode, which could cause injury when the driver attempts to open the door and exit the car.
Ford has stated that the defect is responsible for one crash and injury to date. To address the defect, Ford has notified owners that it will inspect cars to ensure that the locking clip on the cable is secured properly. If the dealer discovers a problem with the gear clip, it will be fixed at no charge.
On the same day this large recall was announced, Ford issued a second, smaller recall for several of its 2017-2018 Ford F-150, 2018 Expedition, 2018 Mustang and 2018 Lincoln Navigator vehicles with 10-speed automatic transmissions. This defect also affects the cars’ transmissions; a roll pin that holds the transmission in “park” might be missing. This could result in the driver being unable to place the vehicle in the park position entirely, even when selected by the driver. If the defect is not repaired, it could cause serious injury to drivers operating the automobile. Dealers confirmed that they will install a roll pin in affected cars to resolve the issue.
