General Motors (GM) has recalled over 3000 Chevrolet Volt vehicles for a defect that could result in sudden stalling. The battery software in the plug-in hybrid cars has been identified as the source of the problem. Defects that cause a car to stall without warning typically generate recalls by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The car manufacturer alerted drivers that a prior update to the powertrain control system in the 2013 vehicles could have caused damage to the cell balancing function, leading to a low voltage state in various battery cells. When the battery voltage falls below a certain level, the car goes into low power mode. The car can lose propulsion after it enters low power mode. The defect was discovered by company engineers who noted an increase in reported problems in cars that underwent software updates, according to the NHTSA. Chevrolet will notify owners of affected vehicles to bring in their cars to address the problem.
In addition to the current recall of 2013 vehicles, GM announced service campaigns for the 2017 and 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV. The auto manufacturer expressed concern that some of these car models may also have damaged battery cells, although no recall has been issued for these models. The update for the Chevrolet Bolt EV gives drivers advanced warnings if a low cell voltage condition is imminent. Although not subject to a recall, the auto manufacturer advises customers to visit dealers for an update as soon as possible.
GM is not the only automaker facing problems with its hybrid vehicles suddenly losing power. In 2015, Toyota announced a recall of 625,000 hybrid cars to repair a software problem that could cause the car to stop running while being driven. Hyundai also recalled its 2016-2018 Sonata Plug-In Hybrids due to battery swelling which could cause the electric motor to become inoperative. This type of defect may lead to serious injury or death and should be repaired as soon as drivers are notified of the recall and automakers provide plans for addressing the defect.
