Honda announced today that it is recalling an additional 833,000 vehicles for defective airbags. The defective air bags deploy with such force that the driver can be seriously injured or killed. This is Honda’s fourth recall for the same defect.
Since late 2008 Honda has since recalled 1.7 million vehicles for the defective airbags. In the most recent report to the National Highway Safety Commission Honda stated that only around 2,400 of the vehicles affected by today’s recall are actually defective.
the vehicles believed to be defective were reported to have been involved in accidents requiring the replacement of the airbag and the replacements were part of an earlier recall. Hinda unable to track down all 2,400 vehicles issued the broader recall.
The newly recalled models are some 2001-2 Accords and Civics; the 2002 Odyssey; the 2002-3 CR-V, some 2002-3 Acura 3.2 TLs and the 2003 Acura 3.2 CL.
Honda has reported a small number of injuries and two fatalities related to the defective air bags. They declined to provide more details, citing pending litigation.
The original recall covered only 3,900 Accords and Civics from the 2001 model year. In 2009 and additional 440,000 vehicles were recalled including some 2002 Accords and Acura’s.
Early in 2010, Honda expanded the recall yet again, adding another 378,000 vehicles. They included more 2001-2 Accords and Civics, as well as 2002 Odyssey and CR-V models, the 2002 Pilot, some 2002–3 Acura 3.2 TLs and some 2003 Acura 3.2 CLs.
