Liquid nicotine has become a popular consumer product for people who use e-cigarettes and vaping devices. Small amounts of liquid nicotine can be extremely hazardous to children and pets. Swallowing liquid nicotine or coming into contact with it through the skin can have deadly consequences.
Keeping children and pets safe around liquid nicotine
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers liquid nicotine to be a household hazardous waste product, so it’s important to take this warning seriously if you’re an e-cigarette or vape user.
Store liquid nicotine in child-resistant packaging, tightly sealed in its container and kept locked up and away from children. Be careful when handling liquid nicotine or solutions containing liquid nicotine. Minimize direct contact with liquid nicotine and especially with your hands which readily absorb toxins at a rate greater than the skin on your arms.
What to do after exposure to liquid nicotine
If your child swallows liquid nicotine or gets any amount on their skin or eyes, immediately call the Poison Control Center Hotline: 1-800-222-1222. Put this number on your cell phone now just in case. If your liquid nicotine didn’t come in a bottle with child-resistant packaging, report the manufacturer and retailer to the Consumer Product Safety Commission to correct the situation.
Vaping and e-cigarette related illnesses and injuries
Although vaping has been touted as the safer alternative to traditional cigarette smoking, on November 9, 2019, scientists reported that vitamin E acetate was found in the lungs of 29 vaping victims of the latest degenerative lung disease that has caused one wrongful death and multiple serious injuries. Taking your cannabis in a rolled joint, pipe or as an edible is far safer than vaping. The risk isn’t worth it.
