After three reported incidents, one of which left a rider paralyzed, Trek has issued a recall of nearly one million bicycles across the United States and Canada. According to a recent article by Time Magazine, the bicycles in question have faulty release levers that could seriously injure and endanger riders. At least three injury accidents have been reported so far. Apparently, it’s possible for the front quick release lever to get caught in the front disk brake, effectively separating the front wheel, leading to an abrupt stop or total loss of control of the bicycle.
Faulty Front Quick Release Levers
At this time, Trek has issued a recall for 900,000 bicycles in the U.S. and 98,000 in Canada. According to Trek, any bicycle equipped with disc brakes and a front quick release lever that can open 180 degrees and contact the disk brake assembly is affected by this safety recall. If you’re not sure if this is what your bike has, take it to a local Trek retailer for a free inspection. Trek is providing owners of these faulty bikes with installation of a new release lever and a $20 coupon.
Bicycle Rider Paralyzed by Faulty Trek Mountain Bike
Of the accidents currently reported, one of the riders suffered from a fractured wrist, another rider suffered from facial injuries and the third rider suffered from quadriplegia as a result of the crash. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is urging consumers to stop using these bicycles immediately. Impacted bicycles were made from any time between the year 2000 and 2015. Check you bicycles as soon as possible.
After an Injury Involving a Defective or Faulty Product
We’re glad that Trek has issued a safety recall and is replacing these dangerous and defective front quick release levers, but the $20 coupon amounts to little more than an insult as a “We’re sorry for endangering your lives and safety for the past few years, but here’s $20” gift.
