An Oakley teenage was behind the wheel of the truck involved in Saturday’s early morning collision that killed another local teen and sent two women to the hospital.
Brentwood police confirmed Tuesday that an 18-year-old was behind the wheel of the pickup truck that ran a red light at Walnut Boulevard and Balfour Road and was broadsided by a car. As of yet no charges have been filed.
The impact overturned the truck, which was carrying four other people ranging in age from 15 to 20, said Sgt. Tim Herbert. Two of the passengers are from Oakley, one lives in Discovery Bay and one is a Brentwood resident.
A former Freedom High School freshman Ashley Malone, 15-years-old, was pinned under the truck. Malone had transferred in February to Antioch Unified School District’s Prospects independent study program. Malone died en route to the hospital.
The pickup truck had been traveling west on Balfour Road when it went through the red light and was struck by a middle-age mother and her teenage daughter who were driving north on Walnut Boulevard, Lt. Tom Hansen said.
The pair was transported by helicopter to a hospital. There is no update on their condition.
Police have not yet received the toxicology report, which will determine whether alcohol played a part in the accident.
One of her passengers had been stabbed in a fight less than one mile away and she was taking him to the hospital when the crash occurred.
The victim was one of three young males injured in that confrontation at Balfour Road and Garin Parkway, police said.
Police don’t yet know what started the fight but think it could be gang-related, Herbert said. The stabbing suspects, who fled on foot, are believed to be three males around 15 to 20 years old and possibly Hispanic, Herbert said.
Anyone with information about either the stabbing or the crash is asked to call Detective Pete Folena at 925-809-7743.
