Playtex has recalled 3.6 million childrens’ plates and bowls in the U.S. and 1.9 million in Canada. The plates and bowls that are covered under the recall have designs printed on the bottom. These designs include cars, princesses, superheroes, construction scenes, giraffes, and more. The plates and bowls are white polypropylene and have a non-slip bottom and colored rim on top. The bowls and plates were sold both separately and as part of a “Mealtime” set which had a plate, a bowl, two utensils, and a cup. Playtex is written on the bottom of the bowls and plates.
The problems stem from the clear plastic that covers the designs on the bottoms of the plates and bowls. Playtex has found that this clear plastic can bubble and peel off, causing a choking hazard for children.
Playtex discovered the problem after receiving 372 reports that plastic covering the graphics on the plates and bowls bubbled and peeled. In 11 cases pieces of plastic was found in children’s mouths and in 4 cases children choked on the pieces of plastic layer.
The plates and bowls were manufactured in China and sold at stores nationwide for the past 8 years including Target, Walmart and Babies “R” Us. The plates and bowls were also available for purchase online through Amazon.com.
Playtex recommends that all consumers stop using the plates and bowls immediately and keep them away from young children. The company is offering a full refund as part of the recall. The plates and bowls cost around $2.50 for a single piece and $15 for a Mealtime set.
