The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced a recall of approximately 1.6 million defective chests of drawers. These defective chests are unstable. If they’re not anchored to the wall, they can pose serious tip-over and entrapment hazards. This can result in injuries or death, especially for small children. At this time, there has been one report of a chest of drawers tipping over on a four-year-old child. That incident did result in an injury. These Ameriwood Mainstays chests of drawers come in a variety of colors, and they have been sold at Wal-Mart, and many other nationwide retailers.
Ameriwood Mainstays Defective Chests of Drawers
These four-drawer chests are made of composite wood and come in six different colors including alder, black forest, white, weathered oak, walnut and ruby red. If you have one of these chests, and it’s not properly anchored to a wall, stop using it immediately and put it in an area where children cannot get close to it. Contact Ameriwood for a free repair kit that includes a wall-anchoring device for the chest. Ameriwood is participating in the CPSC’s voluntary Fast Track Recall process in order to swiftly notify and offer remedies to help protect consumers as quickly as possible.
Target Recalls Dressers Due to Tip-Over and Entrapment Hazards
The Ameriwood chests aren’t the only dressers being recalled due to tip-over and entrapment hazards to small children. Target recently announced a recall of Room Essentials 4-drawer dressers for similar concerns. At this time, about 175,000 of these dressers are being recalled. As of September 13, 2017, there have been 12 reports of these dressers tipping or collapsing on consumers and children. Two incidents involved three-year-old children. Thankfully, no serious injuries have been reported yet. If you have one of the Room Essentials dressers, you can take it back to Target for a full refund. Also, stop using it immediately, and put it somewhere that your children can get to it.
