A 25-year-old San Francisco woman was killed while crossing the with an armful of groceries and was hit by a pickup truck.
Suzanne Monacowas walking west across Masonic Avenue near Euclid Avenue in the Laurel Heights neighborhood around 5:20 p.m. when a driver heading south on Masonic struck her, relatives and authorities said.
Monaco, who had just left a grocery store, was not in the crosswalk when she was hit, police said. She died 30 minutes later at San Francisco General Hospital.
The man driving the Toyota pickup remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, said police spokesman Sgt. Daryl Fong. His name was not released, and he has not been arrested.
Monaco, originally from Chico, was working toward becoming a certified architect, said her father, Jim Monaco. She worked at 450 Architects, a small design firm in San Francisco that specializes in environmentally oriented projects.
Monaco was “an impassioned, conscious and at times whimsical designer,” according to her biography on the firm’s website.
On Friday, Monaco completed schematics of new playgrounds for the San Francisco Unified School District, a project she had been working on since shortly after joining 450 Architects a year ago, said Richard Parker, a principal at the firm.
“She would’ve actually gotten to see drawings that she did get built; she was looking forward to it,” Parker said.
Monaco knew by the second grade that she wanted to be an “architect who traveled the world,” said her mother, Chris Monaco.
“I think she grew up watching me design and build decks and it just became part of her,” said Jim Monaco. “She had an amazing sense of three dimensions.”
She earned a master’s in architecture and had passed two of the seven grueling tests required to become a certified architect, her mother said. She had also visited every continent but South America and Antarctica.
“She had lived a life that was full, and then at 1 a.m. we get a call,” Jim Monaco said. “You don’t understand what it’s like to lose your own child.”
