The victim in an early morning hit-and-run accident on Saturday has been identifed by the coroner’s office as javier Santacruz Orozco, 43 of San Jose.
The accident happened on the freeway ramp that connects southbound Interstate 680 and southbound Highway 101.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Orozco was killed after his car was rammed from behind by a 2003 Honda. The crash was reported at 1:17 a.m. Saturday.
The CHP said Orozco was driving his 1999 Saturn southbound from I-680 to the 101 southbound connector ramp when he was approached from behind by the Honda at an unknown rate of speed. When the Honda rear-ended Orozco, the Saturn rolled onto its roof and came to rest blocking both lanes of traffic on the ramp.
The driver of the Honda apparently fled on foot, leaving his car on the ramp.
Investigators did not know Saturday evening if the Honda was stolen or who the driver was, CHP officer Scott Cakebread said.
Officers arriving at the scene of the crash found Orozco fatally injured in his car.
Both lanes of traffic on the ramp were closed for more than three hours while officers investigated. They were reopened about 4:30 a.m.
The crash is under investigation. The CHP said it is unknown if alcohol played a role.
