Pacific Cycle is recalling the 2018 Schwinn Abbott Adult Men’s Full Suspension Mountain Bicycles. The downtube [connects handle bars to the sprocket] cracks and collapses, causing extremely dangerous falls on rough terrain. Approximately 17,600 bicycles are in the recall.
Details About The Schwinn Mountain Bike Recall
The Schwinn mountain bikes involved in this recall are black with green, yellow and blue colors on the downtubes. “Schwinn” is printed in green and yellow on the downtube, and “Abbott” is printed in blue on the top tube of the bicycle, near the bike stem and handlebars. These bikes have 29” wheels, and they were initially sold at Walmart and online between February 2018 and August 2018 for approximately $180.
Mountain Bike Safety
Mountain bikes have to take a beating in this extreme sport. A main tube should never fail since all falls, whether uphill or down, are serious even with helmets and gloves. These bicycles were targeted for the low end of the market with a ridiculously low price and still turning a profit for Schwinn, no doubt accomplished by poor materials and/or insufficient testing.
