It’s hard to keep track of the recalls issued in the last few years by GM. First, it delayed issuing a recall for a fatally deficient ignition switch, which affected airbag operation. The expansion of that recall affected millions of vehicles, including Chevys, Pontiacs, and Saturns. Now, it has issued a completely separate recall that affects the proper operation of four million cars and trucks.
Last September, GM issued a recall on millions of vehicles for faulty airbag software that can cause the airbag not to deploy. USA Today describes the problem well: “[T]he car’s sensing and diagnostic module—a tiny computer that senses what the vehicle is doing and controls air bag deployment—can go into test mode . . .. If that happens, the front air bags won’t inflate in a crash and the seat belts may not work either.”
Already, one person has died and three others have been injured as a result of this fatal software defect. This recall is completely separate from both the Takata airbag recall and GM’s defective ignition switch, which can disengage, causing airbags not to deploy.
Here is a list of the affected vehicles:
- 2014-2016 Buick LaCrosses, Chevy SSs, and Chevy Spark EVs;
- 2014-2017 Buick Encores, Chevy Caprice police cars, Chevy Corvettes, Chevy Silverados, Chevy Trax, and GMC Sierra;
- 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalades and Escalade ESVs, Chevy Silverado HDs, Chevy Surburbans, Chevy Tahoes, and GMC Yukons and Yukons XL.
The good news is that there is an easy fix for this software problem. However, it won’t help if you don’t contact a dealer. Don’t wait, do it today.
