When children are suffering from a severe injury or disease, there are more important things on their minds than what they are going to wear to prom, but sometimes that’s just what those kids need to feel normal and take their minds off of the more serious issues they face. The Shriners Hospital offered exactly that to their patients–a prom with all the bells and whistles.
It was a wonderfully lavish display that brightened the mood of all their patients. Volunteer makeup artists and hair stylists made sure each child looked perfect in the black and gold themed dance hall. A volunteer DJ played pop tunes for them to dance to. Other amenities included traditional prom accessories like corsages and boutonnieres, limousine rides up to the red carpet, family members cheering for the prom-goers, and photographers snapping pictures of all the guests of honor. The patients, their families, and their friends all had a great time.
The Shriners Hospital treats very complex and challenging medical conditions without requiring payment from patients’ families. It’s really heartwarming to see that the Shriners hospital not only treats such serious illnesses free of charge, but that it provides other benefits to make patients feel more welcome, comfortable, and, for a while, normal.
One of the guests of the prom was Austin Deo, who has been a patient since he was 3 with cerebral palsy, spinal cord, and orthopedic issues. Even though he wasn’t able to say it, his mother said she could feel that he was having a good time. For families who wonder what life could be like for their children if they had not been born with debilitating conditions, this dance was a reminder that even those with serious medical conditions can have a special night just like other children.
