Crashes can happen all too often, but if you own a Chevy, Pontiac, or Saturn, the crash may not have been your fault. GM recalled a lot of these GM models for having faulty ignition switches, a safety problem that could be fatal if left unfixed.
The problem with the ignition switches is that they may turn to the “accessory” or “off” position while the car is in motion. When this happens, the car loses its power brakes and power steering, and the airbags will not deploy. This triple threat makes crashes much more likely and makes them more deadly.
There have been a lot of cars recalled so far, including the following:
- All 2005 to 2010 Chevrolet Cobalts;
- 2007 to 2010 Pontiac G5;
- 2003 to 2007 Saturn Ions;
- 2006 to 2011 Chevrolet HHRs;
- 2006 to 2010 Pontiac Solstices; and
- 2007 to 2010 Saturn Skys.
If you own one of these cars, GM has stated that you should take everything off of your key ring except your key, and get the ignition switch repaired as soon as possible. A lot of damage has already been done though, with 109 deaths and hundreds or even thousands of injuries being linked to the defect.
If you own a vehicle, it can be a full-time responsibility keeping it maintained to safe standards, and that includes addressing recalls. Unfortunately, sometimes companies such as GM don’t act responsibly, leaving people driving cars that they don’t know have a safety problem.
It is important to pay attention to unexplained occurrences, such as a car stalling for no reason, or an ignition switch changing position on its own. If things like this happen, especially if they create dangerous conditions, it’s best not to drive the car until such problems can be evaluated and fixed.
