The woman who died last Friday, after the Cadillac in which she was riding crashed into a tree in Berkeley had just graduated from UC Berkeley, according to a university official.
Milanca Alicia Lopez, 22, died in the accident that left her son, Xavier, and boyfriend seriously injured when they struck a roundabout and then a tree at California Street and Allston Way shortly before 1:15 a.m. Friday, authorities said.
Lopez’s boyfriend, who was driving, was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland. His name has not been released.
Xavier was taken to Children’s Hospital Oakland. Family members have asked that the boy’s condition not be released.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Lopez graduated from UC Berkeley earlier this month with degrees in Chicano studies and social welfare, officials said. Pictures on a Facebook memorial page show Xavier walking with his mother. Both wore a cap and gown. On top of Xavier’s cap was written, “I (Heart) My Mom.”
Lopez had planned to start working toward a master’s degree at UCLA this fall.
